Central Africa: found in the Itombwe Mountains of eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo and south-western Uganda.
A localized and rare restricted-range species.

Taxonomy

This is a monotypic species[1].
The populations of Uganda and the Democratic Republic of the Congo were once thought to represent different subspecies, but differences turned out to be individual variations. However, they show differences in ecology and behaviour and may merit taxonomic separation.

Habitat

Primary montane forest, forest edge and bamboo-dominated forest. Found at 1760 - 2480m in the Democratic Republic of the Congo and 2060 - 2285m in Uganda.

Behaviour

Diet

Feeds on invertebrates, seeds and fruits. Forages singly or in small groups of up to 10 birds. Also in mixed-species flocks.

Breeding

A described nest was a spherical structure with a side entrance made of green lichen and suspended ca. 11m above the ground from a branch, directly overhanging a stream. Only few data about breeding.

Movements

A resident species with some possible short local movements.
