Identification
25cm. A medium-sized, distinctive myna.
- Black head, mantle and upper back
- Creamy orange broad collar on hindneck and side of neck
- Lower back with elongated and degraded feathers with deep orange tips
- Dark brown wing with white patch (forming wingbar in flight)
- Black chin, throat and belly
- Yellow lower belly and vent
- Creamy white undertail-coverts
- Yellow eye
- Dark blue circumorbital bare skin around eye
- Yellow bill and legs
Sexes similar. Juveniles have duller yellow areas, mottled with black.
Variations
- orientalis with glossy-yellow forehead and crown
- robertsoni with glossy orange crown and nape
Distribution
Endemic to New Guinea.
Widespread and fairly common. A popular species in Asian bird trade.
Taxonomy
Subspecies
Three subspecies recognized[1]:
- M. a. anais:
- Lowlands of north-western New Guinea and Salawati Island
- M. a. orientalis:
- Northern New Guinea (east to Huon Peninsula) and Yapen Island
- M. a. robertsoni:
- Southern New Guinea (east to Milne Bay)
Habitat
Lowland forest. Also in partially cleared areas and forest edge. Occurs below 600m.
Behaviour
Diet
Feeds only on fruit.
Forages in pairs or small flocks in the canopy, sometimes together with Yellow-faced Myna.
Breeding
Breeding season from end of wet season through dry season. A monogamous species, possibly with long-term pair-bonds. The nest is placed in a tree hole, 10 - 30m above the ground.
Movements
Presumably a resident species.
