Identification
17–19 cm (6¾-7½ in)
The lesser coverts have iridescent gold spots which are difficult to see except in good light. The tertials have two blackish spots, not always visible.
Distribution
South America: found from the Andes of southern Peru to north-west Argentina and northern Chile
Taxonomy
This is a monotypic species[1].
Habitat
Puna.
Behaviour
It looks small, round and legless and usually has its short tail pointed downwards like a quail.
Diet
Ground feeders in small groups, though sometimes seen in large flocks. Their actual diet isn't known.
