Identification
11cm (4¼ in). A smallish, stout-billed and short-tailed Euphonia.
Male
- Entirely dark glossy steel-blue plumage
- Golden-yellow pectoral patch
Female
- Yellowish tinged forehead
- Olive crown and upperparts
- Grey underparts with olive-yellow on sides and flanks
Juveniles undescribed
Distribution
South America: found in tropical south-eastern Venezuela, the Guianas and eastern Amazonian Brazil.
Uncommon to fairly common.
Taxonomy
This is a monotypic species.
May form a superspecies with Chestnut-bellied Euphonia and Rufous-bellied Euphonia.
Habitat
Humid lowland forest and forest edges. Usually in the canopy.
Occurs from lowlands up to 600m
Behaviour
Often wags or twitches its tail to one side or from side to side.
Diet
Diet not well known. Recorded to feed on small berries and fruit. Takes probably some insects.
Usually seen singly or in pairs. Sometimes in mixed-species flocks.
Breeding
Breeding recorded in Brazil in November. One reported nest was rounded and had a side entrance. Uses also abandoned nests of other species. Lays 3 to 5 eggs.
Movements
A resident species.
