Capito auratus

Identification

Male: orange-red throat and yellow unmarked chest with browny streaks on the flanks of the belly.

Distribution

South America: found in Colombia, Venezuela, Ecuador, Peru, Bolivia, Brazil

Formerly considered conspecific with Black-spotted Barbet. Several subspecies have been assigned to Black-spotted Barbet by Clements but are all now moved to this species.

Subspecies

There are 8 subspecies[1]:

  • C. a. punctatus:
  • South-central Colombia along lower eastern Andes to central Peru (Junín)
  • C. a. auratus:
  • North-eastern Peru (mouth of Río Napo s along Amazon and Río Ucayali)
  • C. a. insperatus:
  • C. a. aurantiicinctus:
  • Venezuela (upper Orinoco region, western Bolivar and Amazonas)
  • C. a. orosae:
  • Eastern Peru (Río Orosa to Rio Javari, south to extreme western Brazil in Acre)
  • C. a. amazonicus:
  • Western Brazil south of Rio Solimões from upper Rio Jurúa east to Rio Purús
  • C. a. nitidior:
  • C. a. hypochondriacus:
  • Northern Brazil (Roraima along Rio Branco to Rio Negro and Solimões)
