Identification

Male: red crown with orange forehead
Female: black crown

Distribution

India, Nepal, Burma and Pakistan.

Taxonomy

Freckle-breasted Woodpecker was formerly considered conspecific.

Subspecies

Two subspecies recognized[1]:

  • D. m. westermani:
  • D. m. macei:
  • Central Nepal to northern Burma and eastern pen. India (Orissa and Andra Pradesh)

Habitat

Forest, woodlands, orchards, acacia scrub.

Behaviour
