Alternative name: Foothill Antwren

Identification

Grey to brown with black wing coverts tipped pale producing 2-3 wing bands. Male has black throat with white spotting. Both have pale eyes.

Similar Species

Several of the congeners similar but has rufous tones to the brown which this species lacks.

Distribution

North-western South America: found in Colombia, Ecuador, and Peru east of the Andes.

Taxonomy

Placed in genus Epinecrophylla by Clements (2010)[1] and Gill and Donsker (2010)[3], and in genus Myrmotherula by Dickinson (2003)[2].

Subspecies

There are 2 subspecies[1]:

  • E. s. spodionota:
  • Eastern slope of Andes of southern Colombia south to northern Peru (northern Amazonas)
  • E. s. sororia:
  • Eastern Peru (south of River Marañón from San Martín to Madre de Dios)

Habitat

Found at an elevational range of 500-1600 m asl inhabiting understory of forests.

Behaviour

Found together with mixed species flocks when feeding on insects and similar invertebrates.
