Western Africa: Guinea, Nigeria, Cameroon, Central African Republic, Equatorial Guinea, Gabon, DRC, Angola
Eastern Africa: Uganda, Rwanda
African Islands: Gulf of Guinea Islands, Bioko (Fernando Po)

Taxonomy

Some authorities place this species in Chloropicus.

Subspecies

There are 2 subspecies^[1]:

• D. e. elliotii:

• South-western Cameroon to western Angola, Gabon, Zaire and eastern Uganda

• D. e. johnstoni:

• Montane forests of south-eastern Nigeria and south-western Cameroon; winters to Bioko Island

An additional 2 subspecies (gabela and kupeensis) are not recognised by all authorities^[2].
