This species was formerly placed in the genus Andropadus.
Subspecies
Three subspecies recognized:
- A. n. kikuyuensis in eastern Democratic Republic of Congo, western Uganda and central Kenya - sometimes split as Olive-breasted Greenbul
- A. n. nigriceps in southern Kenya to northern Tanzania
- A. n. usambarae in southeast Kenya to northeast Tanzania
A. n. kikuyuensis is sometimes included in Western Mountain Greenbul.
Uluguru Greenbul, Black-browed Greenbul, and Yellow-throated Mountain Greenbul are sometimes included in this species.
