Hylophilus hypoxanthus

Identification

• 11-12 cm/4-5 inch
• 18 grams/ ¾ ounce
• Nominate a drab olive color from above bill, across top and down back of head
• Varying shades of olive down back, rump, and tail
• A yellowish shade to underparts
• Sexes similar
• No description for juvenile

Distribution

South America: found in Colombia, Ecuador, Peru, Bolivia and Brazil.

Taxonomy

Placed in genus Pachysylvia by Clements.

Subspecies

There are 6 subspecies[1]

  • P. h. hypoxantha:
  • P. h. fuscicapillus:
  • Eastern Ecuador and northern Peru (south to R¡o Mara¤¢n)
  • P. h. flaviventris:
  • Tropical central Peru (San Mart¡n to Ayacucho)
  • P. h. icterica:
  • Western Brazil, extreme south-eastern Peru (Puno) and northern Bolivia
  • P. h. albigula:
  • Brazil south of the Amazon (Rio Purus to western bank of Rio Tapajos)
  • P. h. inornata:
  • Northern Brazil south of the Amazon (Rio Tapajos to Rio Tocantins)

Habitat

This species can be found, usually, in humid treetops from sea level to lowland areas. However, sightings are possible at elevations of around 200 meters/700feet above sea level in Venezuela and Peru in the area of 1100 meters/3500 feet above sea level.

Behaviour

Not thought to be particularly active, but does mix with other species when looking for food.

Diet

Eats insects and larvae found in the upper sections of trees, often searching in the company of other species.
