Similar Species
Resembles Spotted Nothura but more rufous with broader streaking below.
Distribution
South America: found in the Andes from southern Peru to Argentina.
A resident species.

- N. d. peruviana:
- Highlands of southern Peru (Urubamba Valley of Cuzco)
- N. d. agassizii:
- Altiplano of extreme south-eastern Peru and western Bolivia
- N. d. boliviana:
- Highlands of western Bolivia (Cochabamba to Tarija)
- N. d. salvadorii:
- Semi-arid subtropical western Argentina
- N. d. darwinii:
- Patagonian steppes of south-central Argentina
Habitat
Open woodland.
Behaviour
Diet
The diet mainly includes fruit with some invertebrates, plant parts, seeds, and roots.
Breeding
They tend to nest on the ground in thick vegetation; the male incubates the eggs and cares for the young.
