Identification
45 cm (17¾ in)
- Crimson head, breast and belly
- Broad blue collar
- Green back, wings and tail
- Some blue in the wings
Female has a smaller bill
Similar Species
Very similar to Red Shining Parrot.
Distribution
Endemic to Kadavu and Ono islands, Fiji. Has been introduced to the main island of Viti Levu; current status there is uncertain. Previously introduced to Tonga.
Taxonomy
This is a monotypic species[1], which in the past has been considered a subspecies of Red Shining Parrot.
Habitat
Mangroves and mountain forest canopy but also down to sea level in secondary growth and disturbed area as well as in village areas.
Behaviour
Often found in groups or breeding pairs.
Can also be seen flying over open areas.
Diet
Most often in canopy feeding on fruits and seeds that it easily tears apart with the powerful bill.
Vocalisation
Easily identified by its raucous call.
