Identification
16 cm, large yellow bill
Medium grey above with paler underside and white on throat. Head like upperside except blackish at base of bill. Bill is large, yellow, with clearly curved culmen. Eye is brown, legs yellow.
Juvenile like a dull version of adult with pinkish-brown bill and like adult, unstriped.
Distribution
South America: found in arid coastal north-western Peru (Tumbes to La Libertad). Has been recorded in Ecuador as a vagrant.
Taxonomy
This is a monotypic species[1].
Habitat
Arid areas often on sandy ground with shrub and sometimes small trees. Found from the coast to 300 m asl.
Behaviour
Feeds mostly on ground, one or two birds together.
