- Neoxolmis rufiventris
Identification
Length: 22-23 cm (8¾-9 in)
Sexes alike. Large and distinctive terrestrial flycatcher. Head is ashy grey with blackish fore-face. Upperparts are brownish-grey. Wing pattern is striking with a frosty pale shoulder, chestnut secondaries and inner primaries, a bold white trailing edge and a blackish outer wing. Breast is pale gray contrasting with pale rusty belly.
Juvenile similar to adult but streaked on breast and has white supercilium.
Similar Species
May be confused with Austral Thrush but Chocolate-vented Tyrant has gray head including throat, different wing pattern, and black bill and legs.
Distribution
Breeds in Patagonian Chile (only Magellanes including Tierra del Fuego) and Argentina; in winter found further north into Uruguay. Vagrant to Brazil.
Taxonomy
This is a monotypic species[1]. This species has in the past been placed in genus Xolmis, but the current world-wide checklists all agree on Neoxolmis.
Habitat
Temperate grassland.
Behaviour
Breeding
Nest is a bowl-shaped cup, lined with grasses and feathers.
Diet
Insects, including large beetles, also small vertebrates including lizards.
Vocalisations
Usually quiet; breeding male emits weak bur-bit at dawn and dusk from the ground or a rock.
Movements
After breeding, moves north to winter in the Pampas of northeast Argentina.
