Distribution
Asia: found in the mountains of western China (Gansu to eastern Tibet, north-western Yunnan and northern Sichuan).
Taxonomy
Some authorities place this species in the genus Bonasa.
Subspecies
This is a monotypic species[1]. Proposed subspecies secundus is not recognised by most authorities[3].
Habitat
Birch and coniferous mountain forest.
Behaviour
Breeding
They build a nest from moss and grass. The clutch consists of 5-8 white eggs.
Diet
The diet includes spruce seeds, buds, leaves, flowers, and shoots.
