Distribution
South America: found in Bolivia, Brazil, Paraguay, Uruguay and Argentina.
Taxonomy
Recent results place this species in genus Veniliornis instead of the traditional Picoides[2].
Subspecies
Four subspecies are recognized[1]:
- V. m. mixtus:
- Northern Argentina (Paraná River drainage and Buenos Aires Province)
- V. m. berlepschi:
- Central Argentina (Córdoba south to Neuquén and Río Negro)
- V. m. malleator:
- V. m. cancellatus:
Habitat
Dry forest and savanna, shrubland.
Behaviour
Diet
The diet includes insects and seeds.
