Identification

38cm
Pale brown, paler throat, long decurved bill.

Distribution

Formerly Chatham Islands, New Zealand. Last recorded around 1900.

Taxonomy

This is a monotypic species[1].

Some authorities (BirdLife International, 2008) place this species in the monotypic genus Cabalus. However, Clements (2007), Howard & Moore (2003), and Sibley & Monroe (1996) all place it in Gallirallus, and the Opus follows this consensus.

It nested in burrow.
