Identification

33-38cm

  • Dark brown above
  • White barring on crown, nape and head
  • Barred back
  • Light brown under-parts barred white and black
  • Rufous facial disk
  • Buff barring on tail
  • Dark brown iris
  • Wings longer than tail

Distribution

South America: found in southern Bolivia, western Paraguay and northern Argentina.

Taxonomy

This is a monotypic species1.

This species has in the past been placed in genus Ciccaba

Habitat

Dry, semi arid, thorny woodland.

Behaviour

Nocturnal.

Diet

The diet includes small rodents, birds, small reptiles and insects.
