Genus: Cacicus
Description
These are the Caciques, large members of the Icteridae family that breed from Mexico south to northern South America in woodlands and forests. They are all mostly black, with some having bright red or yellow splashes of color on the wings, rump, or crissum to distinguish them. All have long, pointed bills and blue eyes as adults. They build long hanging nests suspended from tree branches in a manner similar to the oropendolas, to which they are closely related.
Taxonomy
Cacicus is a genus in the family Icteridae.
Of the Caciques, only the aberrant Yellow-billed Cacique and the Yellow-winged Cacique are not of this genus.
Casqued Oropendola and Band-tailed Oropendola were formerly placed in their own monotypic genera.
