Identification

Male

  • Glossy blue-black
  • Black wings
  • Bright blue shoulder
  • White underwing coverts and axillars
  • Large, deep, conical, dark grey bill

Female

  • Light buff-brown
  • Olive-grey bill

Distribution

South America: found only in northern Venezuela (lower Río Caroni in Bolívar).

Taxonomy

This is a monotypic species1 that was only described in 2003.

Habitat

Bamboo forest on river islands.

Behaviour

The diet includes weevil.
