South America: found in Ecuador, Peru, Bolivia, Brazil, Paraguay, Uruguay and Argentina

There are 5 subspecies[1]:

  • S. r. similis:
  • Andes of extreme southern Ecuador and northern Peru (Cajamarca)
  • S. r. cabanisi:
  • S. r. oleaginea:
  • S. r. rufosuperciliata:
  • South-eastern Brazil (Minas Gerais to São Paulo and Paraná)
  • S. r. acrita:

Lowland to about 2000 m asl. in forest, riverine areas and second growth. Seems more likely in lower areas in the Atlantic forest than in the Andes, where also found in bamboo patches.

Usually singly or in pairs that often occur with mixed species flocks. Feeding usually low in forest.

Their main diet seems to consist of arthropods and tent caterpillars.

In Brazil described as high and sharp, in Ecuador as rough.
