Identification

17–18 cm (6¾-7¾ in)

  • Olive-brown upperparts with darker wings, rump and tail
  • Streaked whitish and olive-brownish underparts
  • Thin buffy eye-ring that continues backwards as an eye-brow

Depending on location, Lineated Foliage-gleaner and Pale-browed Treehunter must be considered.

Distribution

South America: found in Ecuador, Peru, Bolivia, Brazil, Paraguay, Uruguay and Argentina

Taxonomy

Subspecies

There are 5 subspecies[1]:

  • S. r. similis:
  • Andes of extreme southern Ecuador and northern Peru (Cajamarca)
  • S. r. cabanisi:
  • S. r. oleaginea:
  • S. r. rufosuperciliata:
  • South-eastern Brazil (Minas Gerais to São Paulo and Paraná)
  • S. r. acrita:

Habitat

Lowland to about 2000 m asl. in forest, riverine areas and second growth. Seems more likely in lower areas in the Atlantic forest than in the Andes, where also found in bamboo patches.

Behaviour

Usually singly or in pairs that often occur with mixed species flocks. Feeding usually low in forest.

Diet

Their main diet seems to consist of arthropods and tent caterpillars.

Voice

In Brazil described as high and sharp, in Ecuador as rough.
