Identification
16cm. A smallish babbler, shaped like Puff-throated Babbler:
- Plain brownish with rich buff-ochre underparts
- Blackish-brown crown and nape
- Short dark bill
Sexes similar, juveniles undescribed.
Distribution
Endemic to Sri Lanka.
Common and widespread.
Taxonomy
Two subspecies accepted:
- P. f. babaulti in the dry zone of north and east Sri Lanka
- P. f. fuscocapillus in the wet zone of southwest and central Sri Lanka
A third proposed race, scortillum is usually considered synonym with the nominate.
Habitat
Dense thickets, undergrowth and bushwood in and outside forest. Also overgrown land near villages. From the foothills up to 1675m.
Behaviour
Feeds on insects.
Usually seen in pairs or small groups of up to five birds. Mostly on ground where turning over leaves in search for insects.
Breeding season mainly March to April. It builds a domed nest from dead leaves, and dry grass which is placed on the ground among foliage; 2-3 white, brown speckled eggs are laid.
Resident species.
