Identification

19 cm (7½ in)

  • Red cap and throat
  • Brown upper breast
  • White lower parts
  • Darker brown upperparts
  • Long dark tail
  • Dark eyes
  • Horn coloured bill
  • Dark legs and feet

Distribution

Eastern Africa: southern Somalia, Kenya, Tanzania, northern Mozambique, and south-eastern Malawi.

Taxonomy

This is a monotypic species[1].

Habitat

Coastal and riverine forest. Savanna.

Behaviour

Diet

Not a lot is known. They feed on insects and a variety of fruit and figs
