Identification
16.5cm.
Male:
- Black head
- Yellow-olive upperparts
- Black tail
- Black chin to upper breast
- Yellow rest of underparts
- Black bill
Female:
- Grey crown and side of head
- Greenish-olive upperparts
- Grey chin, throat and upper breast
- Yellow rest of underparts
Juveniles similar to female but with rufous underparts and upperparts
Distribution
Found on Bougainville Island (Papua New Guinea).
Generally uncommon.
Taxonomy
This is a monotypic species.
Formerly considered conspecific with Guadalcanal Hooded Whistler.
Habitat
Montane forests mainly at 1200 - 2400m. Co-occurs with Golden Whistler in lower elevations.
Behaviour
Feeds on insects. Takes sometimes small snails, berries and seeds.
Fledglings were seen in October. No other information about breeding.
