Identification

Adult

  • Black above
  • Reddish-chestnut underparts and malar stripe
  • Black throat
  • Bill up-turned and hooked

Immature

  • Grey-brown on throat and above with hint of wing bars
  • Pale grey malar stripe

  • Buffy-rufous lower belly and undertail coverts

Distribution

Peru, Chile, Bolivia and a disjunct population in northern Colombia.

Taxonomy

Subspecies

Two subspecies are recognized[1].

  • D. b. brunneiventris: Andes from northern Peru (north to central Cajamarca, and to Amazonas south of the Marañón River) south to northern Chile (south to northern Tarapacá) and to northwestern Bolivia (La Paz)
  • D. b. vuilleumieri: Andes of northwestern Colombia (northern ends of the Western and Central Andes, Antioquia)
  • Subspecies vuilleumieri is smaller with a proportionately larger black throat patch (Graves, 1980)

The second subspecies has been viewed as a candidate for becoming a full species due to geographical isolation, size difference and genetic divergence (there is evidence that the 2 subspecies are not sister taxa).

Habitat

Shrub and forest borders between about 2,500m and 4,000m.

Behaviour

Diet

The diet includes nectar.
