Identification
- Black head
- Chestnut-black ear-coverts
- Dark green upperparts

- Yellow underparts
- Black throat
- Red band across the lower chest
- Ivory maxilla and black mandible.
Distribution
South America: found in Colombia, Venezuela, Guyana, Suriname, French Guiana and Brazil.
Taxonomy
Subspecies[1]
There are 3 subspecies:
- P. a. atricollis:
- P. a. aracari:
- Disjunct populations in north-central, east and south-eastern Brazil
- P. a. wiedii:
- Eastern Brazil (Minas Gerais, São Paulo, Paraná and Santa Catarina)
A fourth subspecies formosus is generally considered to be invalid.[2]
Habitat
Savanna, wetlands and rainforests.
Behaviour
Breeding
They do not tolerate disturbance at the nest site, so will generally have several nesting holes in the area. The clutch consists of two to four eggs which are incubated for 16-17 days.
Diet
The diet includes fruit and some insects.
