Identification

Male

  • Turquoise-blue
  • Black: throat patch, short eye-stripe and upper mantle
  • Wings mainly black but have broad blue fringes to greater coverts and tertials
  • Blackish tail
  • Red iris
  • Dusky legs

  • Greeny-blue on forecrown, cheeks, scapulars and rump
  • Dull buffish below.

Distribution

South America: found in south-eastern Brazil (Minas Gerais to Santa Catarina).

Taxonomy

This is a monotypic species[1].

Habitat

Moist lowland forests and montanes, to 1,700 m.

Behaviour

Diet

Their main diet consists of insects and small fruits; also nectar, berries and seeds.
