Identification
Size: 12-15 cm, wing 7.3 cm, weight 15.9g
Male: black cap, small black patch on the chin, greenish-yellow with yellowish rump, face and underparts.
Female: Two colour morphs: yellow and grey. Slightly duller than the male.
Distribution
South America in Chile (southern 2/3), South Argentina and the Falkland Islands.
Taxonomy
This is a monotypic species[1].
Formerly placed in genus Carduelis.
Habitat
Woodlands and areas with some trees.
Behaviour
Breeding
Breeding takes place in early Sep-Dec in the Falklands; the nest is a neat cup of fine grass, lined with hair, wool or root fibres, placed in fork of a large bush up to 1.8 m above ground or in mature Tussac grass. The clutch consists of three to five pinkish-white eggs marked with red-brown spots.
