Identification

16 cm. A monarch with a long, dagger-like and slightly upturned bill.

  • Black forhead and lores to ear-coverts, chin and throat
  • Dark grey upperparts to uppertail-coverts, blackish upperwing-coverts and flight-feathers
  • Tail black on inner feathers, becoming white towards outermost feathers
  • White underparts
  • Dark eye
  • Ash-grey to lead-grey bill

Sexes similar. Juvenile has a pale forecrown, a whitish face to throat and neck, greyish-brown upperparts, buff edges and tips on outer tail feathers and cinnamon-brown underparts.

Similar species

Has a larger and longer bill than Spectacled Monarch. Also no rufous in plumage and only the centre of throat black.

Distribution

Indonesia: found in eastern Lesser Sundas (Babar, Damar, Larat, Yamdena and Selaru).
A fairly common restricted-range species. Uncertain status on Damar, not found in 2001 on the island.

Taxonomy

This is a monotypic species[1].

Formerly placed in genus Monarcha.

Habitat

Moist lowland forests and mangrove forests, including selectively logged areas.

Behaviour

Steeply raises and fans its tail when alarmed or agitated.

Diet

Knot well known, but probably feeds mainly on small invertebrates.
Forages in pairs or small groups, very often in mixed-species flocks. Searches for food in middle level of trees.

Breeding

No information.

Movements

This is a resident species.
