- Pseudobulweria becki
Pterodroma becki
Identification
- Dark brown upperparts, head and throat
- Under-wings dark with distinct white wingbar
- White belly and breast
Distribution
At sea around islands east of Papua New Guinea; breeding location unknown.
Taxonomy
This is a monotypic species.
P. (rostrata?) becki
Formerly lumped within Tahiti Petrel (P. rostrata) by Clements, it is now treated as a full species by Clements (2009), Howard & Moore (2003) and Sibley & Moore (1996).
Pseudobulweria vs. Pterodroma
Clements (2010) and Sibley & Monroe (1996) place Mascarene Petrel, Tahiti Petrel, Beck's Petrel and Fiji Petrel in Pterodroma. However, Howard & Moore, 2003, Brooke 2004, Christidis & Boles 2008, and Gill & Donsker 2010 recognise the genus Pseudobulweria.
Habitat
Believed to breed on small islands with tall mountains, otherwise strictly pelagic.
Behaviour
Breeding
It is likely to nest in burrows, which are visited nocturnally, however, as it has only recently been rediscovered, very little is known.
