Identification
16 - 17cm (16¼-6¾ in).
Male
- Black forehead and crown
- Rest of plumage narrowly barred black and white
- Dark brown iris
- Large bill
Female
- Rufous crown with black tipped crest
- Pale buffy white and unbarred throat
- Cinnamon-buff underparts with barring limited to sides
Similar species
Male resembles Fasciated Antshrike but note different eye colour, no bares on forehead and more crested appearance.
Distribution
South America: found locally from south-eastern Peru to north-western Bolivia and south-western Amazonian Brazil.
Fairly common in appropriate habitat.
Taxonomy
This is a monotypic species which in the past has been treated as a subspecies of Fasciated Antshrike.
Habitat
A bamboo specialist. Occurs in thickets of Guadua bamboo in humid lowland and foothill forest, up to 1200m.
Sometimes also in dense vine tangle.
Behaviour
Diet
Feeds on beetles, insect larvae and other insects.
Forages usually in pairs, sometimes in loose association with mixed-species flocks.
Breeding
Nothing known about breeding.
Movements
Presumably a resident species.
