Identification
23–25 cm (9-9¾ in)
Male
- Head and mantle coppery green
- Throat and face black
- Rump plain green to bluish green
- Uppertail green occasionally to coppery-green, with moderate black terminal band; no subterminal band
- Breast blue-green to golden-green
- Belly yellow
- White band separating yellow belly from breast can be complete, incomplete, or absent
- Undertail barred black and white, 6-7 bars per cm, usually wider black than white
- Wing coverts black and white with about 14-15.5 bars per cm
- Bill yellow , quite strongly serrated at the cutting edges, seemingly to better hold on to insects and similar animals
- Eye-ring blue to blue-grey
Female
- Head, upper breast and back brown with yellowish tones
- Uppertail dark rufous-brown
- Yellow belly
- Undertail barred black and white with 4-5 bars per cm; black bars narrower than white
- Undertail infused with brown either basally or at the edge in about half the birds
- Bill mostly yellow
- Eye-ring blue-grey
Distribution
Taxonomy
Black-throated Trogon was in 2024 split into four species:
- Northern Black-throated Trogon - Tropical south-eastern Honduras to extreme north-western Colombia
- Choco Black-throated Trogon - Tropical western Colombia and western Ecuador
- Amazonian Black-throated Trogon - Amazonian South America from eastern Colombia, Ecuador, and Peru to Amazonian Venezuela and the Guianas, as well as to Amazonian Brazil
- Atlantic Black-throated Trogon - northeastern Brazil to Paraguay and northeastern Argentina
Subspecies
Clements recognizes these subspecies[1]:
- T. r. muriciensis:
- Alagoas, Brazil (Murici forest)
- T. r. chrysochloros:
Habitat
Behaviour
This species is more dependent on insect and similar animals for food than similar species of Trogons. Due to this, they more often follow monkeys or army ants through the forest.
