Identification
30cm. A distinctive myna.
- Long, wispy crest on head
- Large bare yellow patch around eye
- Long and graduated tail
- Mostly black plumage with glossy blue-black feather tips
- White lower back
- Dark chocolate-brown wing
- Yellow to brown eye
- Yellowish bill
- Olive-yellow to blackish legs
Sexes similar. Juveniles similar too but plumage is not glossy and it has buffish feather edgings.
Distribution
Endemic to the mountains of north-central and south Mindanao, Philippines.
Restricted-range species with very small, fragmented range. Still common at some sites like Daggayan, Mount Kitanglad and Mount Apo.
Taxonomy
This is a monotypic species.
Formerly placed in the genus Basilornis.
Habitat
Above 1,250 m in forest and forest edge.
Behaviour
Usually seen singly, in pairs or in small groups.
Diet
Feeds on fruits and insects.
Breeding
Breeding recorded in February and July. Two described nests were in old woodpecker holes. The nest itself was made of twigs and leaves. No other information.
Presumably a resident species.
