Identification
- Greyish-brown upperparts heavily streaked with dark brown
- Whitwith bold dark brown streaking
- Pale, slender, pointed bill.
Distribution
Eastern Africa: found in the Western Rift Valley scarp in Ethiopia.
Taxonomy
This is a monotypic species[1].
This taxon is considered a subspecies of Yemen Serin by some authors.
It is placed in different genera, eg Carduelis or Serinus.
Habitat
Montane scrub, tussock grass and heath on steep slopes and cliffs.
Status
Only discovered in 1976, this is a rare and elusive species. Classified as Vulnerable in the 2008 IUCN Red List.3
Behaviour
Three eggs are laid in a nest which is made in a hole beneath an overhanging earth bank.
