Identification
18 cm
- Reddish-brown plumage
- Dull yellowy-orange forehead and lores, with black scaling
- Blackish-brown crown, with dark olive-brown scaling
- Narrow buffy-cinnamon supercilium and subocular stripe
- Dull chestnut eye-stripe
- Blackish stripe from mandible to auriculars, with chestnut spots
- Greenish-chestnut nape and upperparts
- Rufous rump and tail
- Underparts pale rufous with tinged olive on sides of belly and crissum
Sexes are similar.
Distribution
Very restricted range in the state of Alagoas in North East Brazil, best looked for in Murici an IBAMA reserve. Recent info indicates that the last observations were from 2007 in Murici and from 2011 in Frei Caneca, in spite of searched after those dates. This species therefore might be extinct by now.
Taxonomy
This is a monotypic species[1].
Habitat
Interior upland Atlantic forest at 400-550 m.
Behaviour
Breeding
It builds its nest from clay.
Diet
The diet includes insects, including larvae taken from dead wood, beetles, grasshoppers and ants.
