Vulturine Parrot - BirdForum Opus

Identification

24 cm

  • Green tinged blue, especially below
  • Olive-brown chest
  • Bright red underwing coverts
  • Yellowy under-tail with a blue tip
  • Un-feathered blackish and orange-pink head
  • Broad yellow collar of feathers with a second black collar
  • Short, square tail
  • Green/grey bill with yellow spot at base of upper mandible
  • Orange eye

Juvenile has a feathered greenish head

Distribution

Brazil south of the river Amazon.

Taxonomy

This is a monotypic species after Bald Parrot was split from Vulturine Parrot.
Formerly placed in genus Pionopsitta; it has also been placed in genus Gypopsitta.

Habitat

Humid forests.

Behaviour

The diet includes seeds and berries.
