Widely distributed but generally uncommon. From [[Europe]] and Northern [[Africa]] through central [[Asia]] to eastern [[China]] and [[Japan]].

Usually occurs in mature deciduous or mixed woodland, often beech and hornbeam, up to 3000m. Also found in some areas in parks, large gardens and orchards. In winter may be seen in more open habitats, along hedgerows and woodland edges.

Distribution

Native to Asia from Pakistan, India and Afghanistan in the east to south-eastern Europe in the west. There have been widespread introductions which have become established in the United States, Canada, New Zealand and Hawaii.

Breeding

The clutch contains between 8 and 20 eggs. They are laid in a ground scrape with minimal lining.

Vocalisation

The song is a noisy chuck-chuck-chukar-chukar.
