Identification

19-22.5cm. Brown back with dark streaks, a blue-grey face and an olive-brown breast, all covered with white flecks and spots. The under tail is a warm buff colour, legs are green.

Distribution

Breeds Europe to Asia, winters in southern Europe, Africa, and south-east Asia.

Freshwater wetlands with shallow water and dense vegetation.

Behaviour

The diet includes insects, snails, worms, small fish and plant materials.
