Identification
10–11·4 cm (4-4½ in) Male
- Sooty black overall plumage
- Orange tints to back plumage
- Dark bill
- Yellow to orange-red gape
- Dark legs
Female is dull olive brown above and brighter olive-brown below moving to whitish in the centre of the belly.
Distribution
Colombia, northern and south eastern Venezuela, Trinidad, Guiana, and eastern Brazil.
Taxonomy
This is a monotypic species[1].
This species has in the past been placed in genus Tiaris.
Habitat
Forest and woodland edges; burnt areas in secondary growth, as well as clearings and grassy scrub.
Behaviour
Diet
They specialise on seeding bamboo.
Breeding
It is believed they time their breeding season to the availability of bamboo seeds.
