18–19 cm (7-7½ in)

  • Adult male - bright red, black wings and tail and pale yellow bill.
  • Adult female - uniform scaly plumage of dull olive-green, yellow rump and pale yellow bill.

Similar Species

The male is a much brighter red than any Rosefinch (Carpodacus) species that may be encountered in similar habitat. The female's scaly plumage differentiates it from female Rosefinches.

Distribution

Asia: found in the Himalayas (Nepal) to south-western China, Myanmar, northern Laos and northern Vietnam)

Formerly included in the genus Haematospiza.

Habitat

Temperate montane fir and broad-leaf forests; generally in clearing and forest edges.

Behaviour

Diet

Their varied diet consists of seeds, berries and buds, with the occasional insect taken.

Breeding

Their nest is a large structure of twigs, roots, grass and other plant fibres.
