Location: Parque Natural Metropolitano, Panama.

Identification

19 cm. Dull red, paler below, bright red throat and central crown, dark bill and eyes. The female is brown-olive, paler and greyer below, yellow throat and small dull yellow crown stripe. Young birds are brown and lack the throat and crown patches.

The red or yellow crown stripe of this species lack a black edge which is found on Red-crowned Ant Tanager.

Distribution

Mexico to Panama and Colombia

Taxonomy

Six subspecies are known of Red-throated Ant Tanager (also known as Red-throated Ant-Tanager): salvini, insularis, discolor, fuscicauda, willisi, and erythrolaema.

Habitat

Thick undergrowth at the edge of forest.

Behaviour

It builds a cup shaped nest in the fork of a shrub or tree and 2-3 white eggs are laid.

The diet includes insects, arthropods and fruit.
