Grus japonensis
Breeding plumaged Grus japonica by edenwatcher
Location: nr. Kushiro, Hokkaido, Japan

Identification

140 cm. Snow white with a patch of red skin on its head.

Distribution

Breeds in Siberia, Hokkaido and Mongolia; winters e China, Korea, and Taiwan.

Taxonomy

A monotypic species.

Habitat

Marshes, river banks, and rice fields.

Behaviour

Its diet includes small amphibians, aquatic invertebrates, insects, and aquatic plants.

It lays 2 eggs.
