The Plain-throated Antwren (Myrmotherula hauxwelli) is a species of bird in the Thamnophilidae family. Not only does this bird have a plain throat, the male also has two white wing-bars on its black wings, white tips to the tertials seen on either side of the back, and a white tip to its short tail. The female is olive-brown above with buff replacing the male's white on the wing-bars and below it is bright cinnamon-rufous with a paler throat.

Identification

This bird has a plain throat; the male has black wings with 2 white wing bars, white tips to the tertials and to its tail. The female is olive brown with buff wing bars, and is cinnamon below with a pale throat.

Distribution

Bolivia, Brazil, Colombia, Ecuador, and Peru.

Taxonomy

Three subspecies are recognized[1]:

  • I. h. suffusa
  • I. h. hauxwelli
  • I. h. hellmayri

Formerly placed in genus Myrmotherula.

Habitat

Subtropical or tropical moist lowland forests.

Behaviour

This bird stays fairly close to the ground, at least if Pygmy Antwren or Moustached Antwren is found in the same area.
