Identification
27–32 cm. (10¾-12½in.)
- Dark browni above
- Long stout bill.
- Pale stripe on ear coverts.
- Blue-grey fringes on wings and tail.
- Streaky, silvery breast extends over buffy-brown belly.
Juveniles lack breast streaks and have plainer head.
Distribution
Endemic to New Caledonia
Taxonomy
Forms a superspecies with Little Friarbird.
This is a monotypic species[1].
Habitat
Common in forests, but mostly in open habitats. They often forage in gardens around human dwellings.
Behaviour
Diet
Insects, nectar and fruit. Probes flowers for nectar. Has been seen to sally out for insects over water.
Breeding
Nest is a thick-walled, unlined, woven cup made of twigs and leaves.
Vocalisation
A variety of loud, raucous squeaks and disjointed calls.
