- Turdus plebejus
Identification
23-26 cm. Dull olive-brown, faint white streaks on the throat, black bill, dark brown legs. The juvenile resembles the adult, but has but has buff or orange streaks on the head and upperparts, and dark spotting on the underparts.
Distribution
Southern Mexico to western Panama.
Taxonomy
There are three subspecies:
- T. p. plebejus - Costa Rica and western Panama.
- T. p. differens - Mexico to Guatemala; olive above, and olive brown below.
- T. p. rafaelensi - Honduras to northwestern Nicaragua; intermediate between the northern and southern subspecies above, and is often merged with differens.
Habitat
Tall mountain forests and adjacent more open areas and woodland edge.
Behaviour
It builds a grass or rootlet-lined large cup nest; 2–3 greenish-blue eggs are laid.
The diet includes small fruits, insects and spiders.
