Ducula oceanica

Identification

41 cm. Largest and most 'pigeon-y' Pigeon in Micronesia. Forehead white, shading to dove-grey on the crown, nape and upper back. rest of upperparts, wings and tail very dark bronzy green. Moustachial / malar area and chin white, rest of head, sides of neck and breast dove-grey, remainder of underparts dark rufous chestnut.

Bare parts :- Bill grey with a black, tall, horn-like cere, legs reddish pink, eye red.

Voice :- Loud bark ' kow, ow, ow, ow ' that speeds up towards the end.

Distribution

Kiribati ( Extinct ) , Marshall Islands, Federated States of Micronesia, Nauru, and Palau.

Canopy of forests and plantations

Behaviour

Solitary and rather shy, particularly where hunted. Very reminicent of a tiny Heron in flight with slow, deep wingbeats.
