Europe to central Russia; winters to coastal southeastern Africa (Natal)

Taxonomy

This is a monotypic species1.

Habitat

Found in areas of dense vegetation; nettles, reeds etc beside streams and ponds, with taller bushes nearby particularly as perches for singing.

Behaviour

Breeding

Three to six eggs are laid in a nest in reeds or low vegetation.

Diet

Diet includes insects, and occasionally berries in autumn.

Vocalisation


Well known for mimicking other species of birds.
