Identification

Distribution

Pantropical with breeding colonies widely scattered. Accidental vagrant to the United States with records in Maine, Michigan, Wyoming, and California.

Taxonomy

Polytypic. Consists of three subspecies.

Fregata ariel ariel Islands in Indian and Pacific oceans

Fregata ariel trinitatis Trindade I. and Martín Vaz I.; wanders to coastal Brazil

Fregata ariel iredalei Mascarene Islands; disperses to coasts of India and Somalia (1)
