Identification
27-30 cm (10½-11¾ in)
- Bronze-green crown
- Metallic green upperparts
- Red belly
- Yellow bill
- Grey throat and breast
- Black primaries with white spots
- Long dark blue tail, heavily marked with white.
Male - wings fine black and white barring
Female - lacks barring
Distribution
Endemic to Hispaniola.
Taxonomy
This is a monotypic species[1].
Habitat
Mountain forests, mature pine and broadleaf forests. Local in coastal mangroves. Observed at heights up to 3000 m.
The population is declining because of habitat destruction.
Behaviour
Quite inactive.
Diet
Their main diet consists of insects, with the addition of small vertebrates such as lizards and anoles and some fruit. They fee in flight sallie round the mids-storey.
Breeding
They nest in tree cavities, including old woodpecker nest holes. Their clutch contains 2 pale green eggs. Dependent on large mature trees for nesting cavities. Eggs (2) pale green. Breeds March-July.
