Identification

30-33cm (12-13ins); a large, plain green parakeet

  • Red carpal and underwing-coverts
  • Bare white orbital ring
  • Red feathers on head occasionally seen
  • Yellowish-green underside of flight feathers and tail

Distribution

Endemic to Haiti and the Dominican Republic.
Introduced to Guadeloupe and Puerto Rico, where it is very local.

Conservation Concerns

Vulnerable according to the 2008 IUCN Red List. Species is declining rapidly, due to habitat loss and persecution.

Taxonomy

This is a monotypic species.
Formerly considered conspecific with the extinct Puerto Rican Parakeet.
Formerly placed in genus Aratinga.

Habitat

A wide variety of habitats, including forests, palm-savanna and open woodlands at all elevations. Humid montane areas are favoured.

Behaviour

Diet

They are known to feed on ficus fruits and are reportedly a crop pest. Little else is known.

Breeding

Nesting takes place in tree-cavities or arboreal termite nests.

Vocalisation

Call: screeches.
